It’s undeniably, absolutely, positively, irrevocably, über fantastically for real.

I’m actually going to Southeast Asia.

Like FOR REAL for real.

Fo rizzle.

Okay, I’ll never ever type fo rizzle again.

Can someone slap me? I’m still in a state of wanderlust stricken shock.

Yesterday I just happened to be perusing Skyscanner to see how much a flight might cost to Thailand in November when I planned to go.

But it was still months away and I was just checking to see how much I would have to save for the flight.

Then I spotted a price tag of $550.

Ya’ gotta’ be kiddin’ me right?!

So…I toyed with the idea a bit of just buying the ticket, then thought I’d give myself a night to humor the thought.

Except I couldn’t get it out of my head!

It was so cheap, like an early birthday present.

And I would land on my Birthday.

Well, before work today I was cleaning the apartment where a friend has let me crash on his couch and I found myself again on the website staring at the ticket.

The next thing I knew I received a confirmation of my purchase.

“Wait, what just happened?”

Yep, it was like I became possessed by the Travel Gods and they forced me to purchase the ticket.

But no, it was me. I purchased the ticket on a whim. And I know with the feeling in my stomach and the insatiable urge to scream out in happiness it was right.

Sometimes all it takes is 20 seconds of insane courage, which usually leads to something amazing.

And it just has.

I will be headed to Thailand starting November 13th and landing on my birthday November 15th. From there? I don’t know. All I know is it’ll be amazing.

The Scoop:

  • Found the ticket on Skyscanner.com
  • Flying out of Los Angeles (LAX) on a 19hr flight which includes a stop over in Taiwan.
  • The average price of tickets from Washington D.C. and New Orleans was around $850, so I decided to take the train across again which will shave $300 off the ticket price.

Which lead to this half-naked happy dance:

Have you been to Southeast Asia? Give me the scoop and share things to do!

  1. My boyfriend and I are going to Japan in November then heading (most likely) to Thailand afterwards. Haven’t bit the bullet yet. Planning on purchasing our tickets in August, so soon!

Awesome, Japan should be amazing! You’ll definitely have to let me know if you and the BF end up there! I don’t know where I’ll be by then but maybe we’ll cross paths!

  2. Hi Ryan, I am currently traipsing through Asia now! In Japan at the moment. SE Asia is amazing! You won’t need to make any plans or even take a guidebook. Adventures just have a way of finding you in this part of the world!

    1. Author

Lovely, because I am utterly terrible at making plans. Usually just show up and roll with it! How are you liking Japan? That’s another top destination for me. You’ll need to give me some SE Asia recommendations! Thanks for the comment Michelle!

  3. Ryan,
First of all, I have to tell you, this is the first post I’m reading on your blog, and I will definitely be back. You are RAD. and wild. and badass. and spur of the moment. and you have an awesome OMG I am excited dance haha.

A HUGE congrats on booking the flight and making it happen!
My lease ends the end of October, and I’m planning to travel again. I’m literally in the same boat as far as timeline goes, and reading this is acting as a pretty major push to go for the same thing and just book the damn flight.

Also, I just really want to film a video of myself dancing like you about booking the flight and put it on my blog b/c its so awesome haha.

Cheers!! Can’t wait to follow you more online!

Ha, aw shucks, thank you Lauren for the gnarly compliments 🙂

DO IT! Book your ticket as well! Haha. I’m glad I’m pushing another by taking action myself, and it was too good to give up.

Where are you thinking of traveling to this fall/winter?

    1. Author

So I’m beginning to hear, I’m now pretty happy I chose Thailand as the starting point, couldn’t give that price up!

  4. Every morning, the first thing I do when I get to work is check Skyscanner, hoping for a surprise cheapo ticket to Southeast Asia to pop up. You are living my dream!

I just found your blog via someone liking a post on Facebook. I’ve been looking around and it really hit home when you wrote about your parents. I absolutely relate. I have been working on writing about how my mother’s death was the inspiration for me to start traveling. She was diagnosed with Cancer at the age of 42, which is the age I turn in 41 days. I have this overwhelming NEED to see everything that she will never be able to.

Jennifer, I’m sure every day she is watching you and so happy you are not missing a second of life.

And 42 is coming but you are taking every advantage you can to embrace the life you want, and I love it!

So glad you found my blog, and I’ll be definitely be following yours!

It gets addicting checking the flights doesn’t it?

  5. Ryan! Awesomeness…..off to Iceland, Scandanavia and Eastern Europe my brother! Have a blast on you trip dizzle

  6. For real for real?!? It’s like you’re calling my name! I’m tearing it up through SEA now and will still be in the area in November. Let’s get together for a post-TBEX party in Asia bro!!!! 🙂

    1. Author

Haha, hell yeah Derek! Can’t wait to grab some drinks in SE Asia. Didn’t know you were there right now, you’ll need to show me the ropes!

  7. Yo Ryan! I’m a new fan… say a few weeks?

Anyway, congrats on securing a CHEAP ticket to Thailand! I’m from Singapore, let me know if you wanna drop by, Ic an show you around.

I’ve been to Thailand a couple of times, Bangkok 3 or 4 times, Phuket twice. I’m guessing you’re heading to Phuket? Clue: Pic of James Bond Island above!

I can give you a few tips, and an acquaintance who works as a travel operator in Phuket, she gives me good prices every time. Bargain with a smile works! I look for her every time I’m in Phuket.

Unfortunately, I’m familiar with only Bangkok and Phuket. Let me know if you need anything. If you’re heading to Malaysia, or Indonesia, well I’ve been to a few places a few times. Yes, I otta stop making return trips and explore other places, I know!

    Cheers!
